Mercury Levels in Fish

What’s Safe and What’s Not

You often hear that fish should be avoided during pregnancy, but some fish can be healthy during pregnancy. Only eat fish that is fully cooked and low in mercury. Use these helpful tips to make sure there’s nothing fishy going on.

Fish with Highest Mercury Content

AVOID Eating

  • Marlin
  • Orange roughy
  • Tilefish
  • Swordfish
  • Shark
  • Mackerel (king)
  • Tuna (bigeye, Ahi)

Fish with Low Mercury Content

Eat no more than six 6-oz servings per month

  • Bass (Striped, Black)
  • Carp
  • Cod (Alaskan)
  • Croaker (White Pacific)
  • Halibut (Pacific and Atlantic) Jacksmelt (Silverside)
  • Lobster
  • Mahi Mahi
  • Monkfish
  • Perch (freshwater)
  • Sablefish

  • Tuna (canned, chunk light)

Safe in Small Amounts
